There are many ways
that you can get involved with
the Tahkai Project:
Awareness:
* Take time to focus
on your natural surroundings, observe the trees around you,
and
familiarize yourself with their distinct characteristics and qualities.
* Keep a log of
specific natural cycles, and pay attention to any anomalies.
* Take advantage of
the Eno River State Park, and explore its territory and history.
Inform:
* Let us know when
and where specific trees are seeding.
* Inform your
friends and family about the project, and engage them in discussion
about
the significance and protection of forests and local heritage trees.
* Learn about local
endangered and invasive species, and keep an eye on any
changes
in their population numbers.
Support:
* Purchase our
trees, and plant them on private property and approved public
spaces.
* Donate time by
collecting a sustainable quantity
of seeds and donating them to
our project. We would love to help you learn the specifics of
various collection,
stratification, and germination techniques. We encourage
collection from areas
where the seeds will have a very low chance of survival to maturity,
such as near
drains and on roads or parking lots. Be careful not to exhaust
specific areas,
as
the health of the species and ecosystem depends on natural dispersal of
seeds
for
reproduction and wildlife nourishment. Never collect seeds from
forests, state
parks, or other protected areas.
* Buy local food,
join the Eno River Association, and support local wilderness
initiatives like those found on our 'Friends'
page.
* Become active
in the local political and regulatory organizations that manage
your
local natural resources.
Activation:
* Create your own
project so you can share your knowledge, skills, and
experience with members of
your community.
